11 Hygge Gift Ideas For Grandma

I’ve been reading a lot about happiness lately. It’s not about lavish holidays or expensive jewellery, it’s about surrounding yourself with simple pleasures for everyday life. I love reading, spending time with my family and playing with my grandchildren. So when I came across the Danish term ‘Hygge’ (pronounced hoo-guh) and discovered it means ‘cosy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life’, I thought YES! Do you know someone who could do with a boost of ‘hygge’? Browse my 10 hygge gift ideas below and help make your grandma feel cosy and contented.

Rattan Table Lamp

One of the main hygge principles is to create warm, comforting pools of light. I have to agree that having a couple of lamps lit on an evening definitely makes me feel cosy. If I’m reading a good book I always move to the space where the lamp will shine down so I can read comfortably. So first on my list of hygge gift ideas is this Rattan Table Lamp which looks so natural and stylish it would make a perfect hygge gift.

Candles

Also top of the hygge gift ideas are candles. I always make sure I have plenty of candles at home. It’s just so nice to watch that flickering flame and be enveloped by a delicious scent. Actually flickering candles always remind me of cosy nights at home as a child when we had power cuts in the 1970s. Of course these days there are hundreds of candles to choose from, not just the plain white ones. And you can get scents for all occasions and holders to suit all styles. I just love these rustic looking candle holders from B&M and this Calm Apothecary Candle with notes of lavender, clary sage and sweet orange sounds just the thing for a cosy hygge night.

Teddy Fleece Hooded Blanket

Feeling hygge is all about being comfortable. So wearing your work clothes when you get home from work is definitely not hygge. But this very cosy looking fleecy hooded blanket is one of my favourite hygge gift ideas. Just imagine getting home from work or even just from the shops, getting into some comfy clothes and popping this on of a cold winter night. Lovely.

Stylish Herringbone Throw with Tassels

If you don’t fancy giving someone a hooded blanket then a throw is a great alternative. This cosy herringbone throw with tassels caught my eye. I love the ochre colour and the very tactile tassels. I’ve included a throw with tassels in my hygge gift ideas as different textures can be very comforting. My son always played with the tag on the neck of his clothes when he was a baby. He cried if there wasn’t one there! So it was obviously very comforting to him. Who knew I had a hygge baby 🙂

Cushions

You just have to look at home styling pages in magazines these days to see that cushions play a big part in making a room more hygge. My husband asked me why we need 6 cushions on our bed … well isn’t it obvious? It just makes the room look cosy doesn’t it? Adding cushions to my hygge gift ideas list is a no-brainer. Everyone needs cushions. I must say I do like a faux fur cushion. Again I think it’s that tactileness of it, you just can’t help stroking a faux fur cushion. And I love this large silver grey faux fur cushion from M&S.

Coffee – hygge in a box

Apparently the number one hygge item in Denmark is coffee so I just had to add it to my hygge gift ideas. I always have to go for a coffee if I’m out shopping, it just makes me happy. So how about giving your grandma the gift of a coffee subscription. Getting a delivery box of good coffee to your door every month sounds like a good idea to me. The BBC Good Food Guide has a great post on ‘10 of the Best Coffee Subscriptions to Order Online in 2022‘. There’s bound to be one that will be ideal. Obviously if your gran would prefer tea then there are also tea subscription boxes too

Mugs

You can’t have coffee (or tea) without the perfect mug can you? I have mugs in my kitchen cupboards for all occasions. Actually I think I may have a mug problem. But you can never go wrong giving someone a lovely coffee mug as a gift. You could actually make up a hygge gift box with a mug, a good jar or packet of coffee and some delicious biscuits. I love this cute Owl Woodland Mug. Embracing nature is a very hygge thing to do so this coffee mug fits right in.

Hygge Gifts

Cakes & Pastries

There’s a reason the Danish have a pastry named after them. Pastries are very hygge! If you want to feel cosy and comforted you wouldn’t eat a carrot stick would you? Coffee and a cake always make things better. You could bake your own cakes if you feel up to the job. These cinnamon rolls over on the BBC Food website sound delicious. Or if you really don’t fancy baking then why not order a delicous selection from Patisserie Valerie … the eclairs look very yummy. And of course this is a gift you and your grandma can enjoy together if you spend some time enjoying a coffee and a cake with them. Even more hygge.

LED Solar Spot Lights

Don’t forget about outdoors when thinking of a good hygge gift. These Quntis LED Solar Spot Lights are idea for creating some really hygge lighting in the garden. Use them to show off a beautiful plant or use them to create a flood of light on the garden steps. Instead of just wrapping up the box and giving it to her why not install them for her and show her how to make the most of the features in her garden.

The Hygge Board Game

Enjoying the simple things in life should definitely include spending time with those you love. Some of my happiest times are when the whole family come round for tea. It just makes you feel blessed. Don’t just give this hygge board game as a gift, arrange a hygge night to get together and play. The Hygge Game is all about bringing people together by encouraging friends and family to share their stories and discuss the big and small things in life.

Hygge in a box

A Hygge Jigsaw

I had to add a jigsaw to my hygge gift ideas as I find they bring me a lot of pleasure. It can be very soothing doing a jigsaw and makes a lovely change from watching television! My grandchildren also love to get the jigsaws out when they come round. There are lots of jigsaws on the market but The Cosy Shed 1000 piece jigsaw from Ravensburger looks very hygge.

Hygge Gift Ideas

If you want to find out more out Hygge then The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Way To Live Well by Meik Wiking is available on Amazon. I’ve been listening to it on Audible and I’m finding it very interesting. There are also some interesting Danish hygge recipes in it.
