Gold vs Silver Jewellery With Grey Hair : 5 Tips To Help You Choose

Have you recently let your hair go naturally grey? I did this year and I’ve noticed some things I wasn’t expecting. The main one being that certain colours now look wrong on me. Beige clothes are definitely out but royal blue ones are in. And accessorising is a whole new challenge, especially necklaces and earrings. Gold vs silver jewellery? Which is going to look better next to your new grey hair? Luckily there are 5 tips to help you choose which will look best.

Should I wear silver or gold jewellery?

I’ve always worn a mix of both silver and gold and to be honest have always preferred silver jewellery. The following tips probably explain why that is.

5 simple ways to decide

First you need to know if you have a cool skin tone or a warm skin tone as this is going to have an affect on whether you should wear gold vs silver jewellery. There are so many beautiful gold and silver necklaces and earrings to choose from you don’t want to buy the wrong one, or nudge your partner into buying you the wrong jewellery gift!

Veins

Your vein colour is a good place to start. If your veins look blue then your’re likely to be a cool tone. If they look more green then you are probably a warm tone.

Sun

How does the sun affect your skin? Do you tend to go red or even burn if you sunbathe? If so, then you’re a cool tone. If you are lucky enough to have skin that tans well then you’re a warm tone.

Eyes

Blue, green or grey eyes usually mean a cool skin tone, whereas brown, amber or green eyes go with a warm skin tone.

Clothes

Dig out something beige from your wardrobe. If it makes you look washed out then you’re probably a cool tone and shouldn’t wear beige! If it still looks good then you’re leaning towards the warm tones. You might also like to read my post on The Best Colors To Wear With Gray Hair from a clothing perspective.

I actually wish I’d known about these simple checks back in the 1980s … it might have saved me buying a yellow skirt and top that looked really hideous on me! Even with dark hair I was probably a cool tone.

Shade of Grey

There are different shades of grey hair (maybe not 50 though). The shade of grey will also have a cool tone or a warm tone. For example if you have white, silver grey or ash grey hair then you’re likely to be a cool tone. Warm greys include salt & pepper, dove grey and blonde grey. Who knew going grey was going to be so complicated!

Now you know what skin tone you are and if your grey hair is a cool or warm tone you can start to decide on your accessories.

Gold vs Silver Jewellery

The next part probably won’t suprise you after reading the above ways to check if you’re a cool or warm tone.

Gold goes better with warm tones and silver with cool tones.

I’m definitely a cool tone and you can see from the photos above that this silver t-bar necklace and octagonal sterling silver hoop earrings from Daisy Jewellery suits me much better than the gold jewellery accessories I’ve had since my hair was dark.

Of course there are exceptions to the rule and if you’re a cool tone but really love your gold jewellery then go ahead and wear it!
